Il-Gremxula tal-Ħajt ta' Malta (forma tal-gżejjer ewlenin)

Maltese Wall Lizard (main-island form) · Podarcis filfolensis maltensis

The common form of the Maltese wall lizard, found on Malta, Gozo and Comino.

The Maltese wall lizard (Podarcis filfolensis) lives on the Maltese Islands and on islands of the Pelagian group in Italy. Within Malta it has four subspecies, each found only in the Maltese Islands. This one, maltensis, lives on the three main islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino.

It is normally greenish and sometimes speckled. It eats small insects such as ants. Males are brightly coloured and defend their territory, puffing up and raising the head when another male comes close. Mating takes place in spring, and one or two eggs are laid, which hatch between June and mid-August.
