Endemic subspecies
Il-Gremxula tal-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral
The form of the Maltese wall lizard found only on Fungus Rock, off the west coast of Gozo.
This subspecies of the Maltese lizard lives on Fungus Rock, a small rocky islet off the west coast of Gozo. It has a reddish belly and blue-like flanks.
Other Maltese lizards live on Malta, Comino and Filfla.
Threats
There are currently no major known threats to this subspecies. However, because it lives on a small and isolated island, climate change, pollution or human disturbance could affect its fragile habitat.
How to help
Respect Fungus Rock and the surrounding marine environment. Avoid using pesticides or chemicals that could harm the environment, and support the protection of Malta’s natural habitats.
