Budebbus tal-fjuri ċatti

Dense-flowered Broomrape · Orobanche densiflora

A broomrape formerly recorded in Malta as Orobanche densiflora var. melitensis and once regarded as a possible Maltese endemic. Recent Maltese botanical accounts treat these plants as a yellow form of Orobanche sanguinea, the Bloody Broomrape.

Broomrapes are parasitic plants that attach to the roots of other plants and have no green leaves. Plants from the Maltese Islands were long known as Orobanche densiflora var. melitensis, a name associated with coastal dunes and garigue and with Lotus host plants.

Recent accounts on MaltaWildPlants consider the Maltese plants to be a yellow form of Orobanche sanguinea rather than Orobanche densiflora. For that reason, this page should be treated as a historical or taxonomic note rather than a confirmed current Maltese species record.
