Moorish Gecko

Moorish Gecko · Tarentola mauritanica

The big-eyed gecko that hunts insects around lit walls on summer nights.

The Moorish gecko is a stocky grey-brown gecko with toes that grip smooth walls. It is often seen at night near lights, where it catches moths and mosquitoes. Native to the western Mediterranean, it lives on old walls, rubble and buildings across Malta.

Threats

It is not seriously threatened, but loss of old walls and pesticides reduce the insects it eats.

How to help

Leave geckos alone, and avoid spraying garden and wall insects.
