A small, slim hunter that is rarely seen but present in Maltese fields and valleys.
The weasel, known in Maltese as il-ballottra, lives in rubble walls, fields and valleys, where it hunts mice, rats and small birds. It is mostly active at night and is rarely seen. Rubble walls and old hedges give it places to rest and to hunt.
Threats
Rubble wall removal, road traffic and the use of poison against rodents.
How to help
Keep rubble walls in place, avoid using rat poison, and report sightings with a photo to Nature Trust (Malta) or to the iNaturalist Malta project.
