Painted Frog · Discoglossus pictus

Malta's only native frog, living in streams and pools in the valleys.

The painted frog is a plump frog with a pointed snout and a pattern of dark blotches. It breeds in rain pools and streams in the valleys, and is most active after rain. Because Malta has so little permanent fresh water, each pool matters.

Threats

Drying of streams, pollution, and the spread of non-native frogs and terrapins.

How to help

Keep streams and pools clean and never release pet terrapins or frogs into the wild. Report dried-up or polluted pools to ERA.
