A yellow-flowered plant of sheltered coastal cliffs and valley sides, found only in the Maltese Islands, and commoner on Gozo than on Malta.
Gozo hyoseris, called Żigland ta' Għawdex in Maltese, was first discovered on Gozo and later found in three separate places on Malta. It is fairly common on Gozo's western coast and rare on Malta, where it survives in small pockets on the north-western cliffs, for example near Rdum il-Qawwi.
It grows on valley sides, sheltered cliffs and rocky ground or banks near the coast, and seldom inland. Yellow flowers appear from February to July.
It is a strictly protected endemic species and is listed in the Red Data Book of the Maltese Islands as threatened.
How to help
Admire it where it grows and leave it undisturbed: it is protected by law. Report damage to plants or their habitat to ERA.
