A bright, noisy bird that passes over Malta on migration in spring and autumn.
The bee-eater is a colourful migrant, with blue-green, yellow and chestnut feathers. Flocks pass over Malta in April and May and again from August to October, calling with a bubbling "prruup" as they go. It catches bees and wasps in flight.
Threats
Illegal shooting on migration, which has been a long-standing problem in Malta.
How to help
If you see anyone shooting or trapping protected birds, move away and report it to the police or BirdLife Malta.
