Bottlenose Dolphin · Tursiops truncatus

The dolphin most often seen from boats and headlands around Malta.

Bottlenose dolphins hunt fish in Maltese waters and are seen in groups, often riding the bow waves of boats. They are intelligent, social animals that use clicks and whistles to find food and talk to each other.

Threats

Entanglement in nets and lines, noise and disturbance from boats, overfishing of their prey and plastic pollution.

How to help

Keep boats slow and at a distance, never chase or feed dolphins, and report a stranded or tangled animal to ERA or the Wildlife Rescue contacts on the Report page.
