An international call aims to finance, build and run a new Malta Film Studios, with a soundstage joined to its famous water tanks.

Malta has opened an international call for proposals to finance, build and operate the Malta Film Studios in Kalkara. The plan centres on a "Land-Sea Super Stage": a modern soundstage fully joined to the studios' water tanks, which Screen Malta says would be the first of its kind in the world.

The project is expected to attract more than €80 million of private investment. Film Commissioner Johann Grech said franchises such as Gladiator and Jurassic World keep returning to Malta for its locations and water tanks, and the new stage would complete what the islands can offer film-makers.
