Ambjent Malta and ERA launch a programme of habitat restoration, invasive-species control and monitoring in protected areas.

Malta has launched E-CORE, a €9 million programme funded by the EU and the government to improve the country's Natura 2000 protected areas. Ambjent Malta and ERA will carry out habitat restoration, control invasive species, monitor wildlife and train conservation workers.

Plans include turning the former Marfa radar station into a Natura 2000 and night-wildlife interpretation centre, and a water heritage trail at Buskett.

Protecting a site on paper is only a first step. Small Maltese habitats close to roads and towns need active care, and the programme's success will be judged by healthier habitats and wildlife.
