The Ministry for Environment, Climate and Planning (MECP) and Nature Trust Malta have signed an agreement to enhance the management and conservation of Chadwick Lakes, one of Malta's important freshwater habitats.

The Chadwick Lakes

Chadwick Lakes represent a significant freshwater ecosystem in Malta. These pools support rare aquatic species and provide crucial habitat for migratory and resident birds. The lakes are part of Malta's natura 2000 network of protected sites.

The Agreement

The partnership between MECP and Nature Trust Malta aims to:

- Improve habitat quality and biodiversity conservation - Enhance water quality and management - Implement sustainable conservation practices - Support scientific research and monitoring - Engage the public in lake protection

Conservation Importance

Freshwater habitats like Chadwick Lakes are among Malta's rarest and most vulnerable ecosystems. The collaboration represents a strengthened commitment to protecting these critical natural resources for future generations.

Next Steps

The agreement will guide management decisions and conservation activities at the site, with both organizations working together to ensure the lakes remain healthy and biodiverse.
