Game of Thrones (season 1)

2011 · Mdina, Fort Manoel, Dwejra (Gozo)

HBO's "Game of Thrones" became a global phenomenon, and Malta featured prominently in its first season (2011). Locations included: - **Mdina** (the "old city" interior): The narrow medieval streets and sandstone buildings of the old capital doubled as King's Landing, the capital of Westeros. Its fortified character and historic atmosphere were ideal for the show's medieval fantasy aesthetic. - **Fort Manoel**: Located on Manoel Island near Valletta, this 18th-century fort provided additional architectural backdrops. - **Dwejra, Gozo**: The dramatic cliffs and coastal areas of Gozo provided otherworldly landscapes for exterior scenes. The production brought international attention to Malta as a film destination and boosted cultural tourism. Fans of the series visit these locations to see where their favourite scenes were filmed.

Still: Munich

Munich

2005 · Valletta

Steven Spielberg's "Munich" (2005), a thriller about Israeli intelligence operatives in the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, used Malta's urban and architectural settings to double for various Mediterranean and European cities. Valletta's distinctive streets, with their narrow lanes, historic buildings and harbour views, provided convincing backdrops for scenes set in European and Mediterranean urban environments. The production demonstrated how Malta's historic capital could be adapted to represent different times and places through camera angles, lighting and production design.

Still: Troy

Troy

2004 · Fort Ricasoli, Kalkara

Wolfgang Petersen's "Troy" (2004), an epic adaptation of Homer's "Iliad", required massive sets depicting the legendary city of Troy and its famous walls. Fort Ricasoli at Kalkara was again selected for its architectural character and size. The film's "Trojan gates" were constructed within the fort, and the fortress's bastions and walls provided imposing backdrops. The film starred Brad Pitt as Achilles, Eric Bana as Hector and Sean Bean, and featured extensive battle sequences and siege scenes filmed across Malta's fortifications and coast.

The Count of Monte Cristo

2002 · Comino, Mdina

Alexandre Dumas's classic novel "The Count of Monte Cristo" was adapted into a 2002 film that used Malta's diverse landscapes and architecture to stand in for 19th-century France, Italy and the Mediterranean locations of the story. Filming locations included: - **Comino Island**: The rocky, dramatic coasts of the small island between Malta and Gozo provided mystical, isolated settings for key plot moments. - **Mdina**: The medieval streets of the old capital served as a European town location. The production showcased Malta's versatility as a filming location, capable of convincingly portraying various Mediterranean and European settings.

Still: Gladiator

Gladiator

2000 · Fort Ricasoli, Kalkara

Ridley Scott's epic "Gladiator" (2000), starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, was a massive Hollywood production that required elaborate sets. One of the most impressive was a replica of the ancient Roman Colosseum, built inside Fort Ricasoli at Kalkara, in the Three Cities area south of Valletta. Fort Ricasoli, a large 17th-century fortification built by the Knights of Malta, provided an ideal shell for the construction. The fort's size and architectural character helped convince audiences of the authenticity of the Colosseum scenes filmed there. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning five Academy Awards including Best Picture. Malta's role as a filming location for major historical epics was confirmed by this production.

Popeye Village

Anchor Bay, Mellieħa · mibni għall-film Popeye tal-1980

In 1980, American filmmaker Robert Altman constructed a complete film village at Anchor Bay, Mellieħa, in the north of Malta. The whimsical Sweethaven village, with its brightly painted buildings and nautical set pieces, was built specifically for the Robin Williams film and became an iconic symbol of the production. After filming wrapped, the set was preserved and has operated as "Popeye Village" (Papai Villaġġ), a family entertainment attraction featuring the colourful buildings, boat rides and views across Mellieħa Bay. The village remains one of Malta's most visited film tourism sites and a testament to Malta's role as a film-friendly destination. Visitors can explore the village, enjoy cafés and restaurants, and see the original film sets and props. It stands as a unique example of a temporary film set becoming a permanent cultural landmark.
